Books. When the first time the book was written, people knew its value. What so values books?
Knowledge! Knowledge of the people who wrote them. The primary objective of the book was to keep information and pass it to the younger generation. In the very beginning of written word people was writing all kind of things on the clay tablets. Clay tablets were used in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. The main purpose of it was to keep track of food supplies, money. Traders, loan sharks were using them.
Later the Egyptians found papyrus and started to make the paper from it. Best papyrus was used for sacred writings. Scientists guess that papyrus was used since First Dynasty. But first evidence is from the account books of King Neferirkare Kakai of the Fifth Dynasty (about 2400 BC). Papyrus books were in the form of the scroll.
China was the first to found paper. It was used for wrapping and padding whatever was used in China that time. It was used as toilet paper as well.
In the ages of 2 and 4, the paper scrolls were replaced to the codex. Codex is the collection of sheets attached at the back. So it was a beginning of the book. The book as we understand.
In the early middle ages, it was a job for the monasteries to conserve books. It was religious texts mostly. Monks were copying and decorating it. But not all. Texts were carefully chosen. It was believed that some information could be dangerous for the monks.
Reading was important to monks lives.
In a 12th-century book culture started to change. The revival of the cities started to take book writing from monasteries. Universities stepped in. Professors and students used it to teach theology. Later, law, science books showed up. The profession of bookseller appeared.
Everything changed then printing press was invented. Books no longer were written single by individual request. Book price was lowered enormously.
Now we have the internet. We can access all information we need of the single click of the mouse. But it wasn’t so easy in the past. People were saving ant taking care of the books. They build libraries, archives. Kings and another kind of rulers had their archives. Only trusted people had access to it. It’s hard to tell the future of the book. Some say it will be gone. This opinion is here for quite some time. It is believed that way because of other media, like radio television internet. But another form of books is popular. E-books. We have easy access to it. The divices such as Amazon Kindle, iPad even a smartphone can run an e-reading software. And another great thing about e-books. It is cheaper than paper books because you don’t need a material to print it. And it is easier to get.
It is available in pdf format. All you have to do is just click the mouse to download it and you ready to read.
There are lots of books these days. From kids tales to serious and important science researchers. And the best thing it is easier for students to prepare for exams.
For example. India has their popular books for exams. Ncert books. Easy to get now on the internet.
Other countries have their books.
In my opinion, books improved a lot from the clay tablets to e-books. For many thousands of years, it was an important thing in human society. So it would be a shame if books will be gone.
